Contemporary Resort Village, Canari in Corsica - Aerial View

Contemporary Resort Village, Canari in Corsica - Aerial View

Location: Canari, Corsica

Built into the excavated cliff face at Canari. The Corsica Resort Village puts back the missing part of the mountain with a “landscape building” using green architecture. This brilliantly re-establishes the once damaged profile of the Corsican landscape.

The existing factory will be rebuilt using sympathetic materials and a vernacular yet contemporary design. Meanwhile, the coast below will have weather breaks to create a docking bay and vertical infrastructure. This allows access the coast, road and buildings.

The design envisages, amongst other things, a marina restaurant, event theatres, a spa centre and resort terraces. Ideal not only for general tourism but also for business and international conventions. In addition, facilities are made available for human activities which would support the project in the long-term, such as planting.

Corsica is a unique island. It’s history goes back thousands of years to the waves of settlers and invaders. Each leaving their cultural footprints and the geological and climatic features in all their diversity. This gives the island and Canari in particular its unique character.

Day 13 mile 384, Mayor’s office at Dun-le-Palestel

Day 13 mile 384, Mayor’s office at Dun-le-Palestel

July 23, Friday
miles today 44, total miles 397
end at La Souterraine

Highlights:
• Left La Chatre at 6:30 am, rain on tent
• Breakfast at small town, hot bakery
• Up and down hills for the for the first 18 miles, I am wasted
• Aigurande market day, British couple
• A long downhill
• Dun-Le-Palestel, angel Gabriel, Le Mairie with pretty garden
• Suisse-Ocean campground at La Souterraine
• Thunderstorm as we set up tent
• Dinner in Suisse-Ocean restaurant

We got up in the dim light of early dawn, and heard drops of rain beginning to hit the tent. We hurried but everything was damp by the time it got packed away. Rode off through the quiet streets of La Souterraine before anyone was up. It is very magical in the early morning to be up and riding around when the world is quiet and deserted.

After 5-6 kilometers we arrived at a village of stone houses and stopped at an open bakery door. There were lights on, people inside. It was a hot bakery - tiny place - a wave of damp heat surrounded us when we entered. The woman at the counter is a mom holding a baby, and a little girl stands next to them looking at the customers. A few old women are talking to the shop woman. At the counter you can see through a doorway into a large room in the back where there is a tall oven in the middle of the room, bread on racks, and trays just coming out of the oven. There are not many wares in the case; croissants, pain au chocolate, almond croissants, and a few types of breads - baguettes and loaves. Much is already gone. We get croissants for our breakfast and a baguette for lunch. Our croissants are warm and perfect. It is 8:oo. What time did her husband get up this morning in order to have croissants ready for us?

I was not mentally prepared for this day. Small hills but many of them, steep climbs and steep downhills, with a little creek at the bottom of every hill. As I look around at all the little hills I think of a plate of oranges cut in half, all arranged on the plate cut-side down. You can't even say that you have accomplished anything! These are not mountains you can brag about going over! You don't need anything famous or big to take all your strength from you. At the beginning of this day I thought we were going to cover a lot of ground so went at it at 100% but by the time we got to Aigurande I was completely wasted, only 18 miles. Aigurande, like most towns in France, is on the very top of a high hill (hence its name: aiguille means needle). I sat on the curb outside the grocery for 1/2 hour - not even energy to go inside - while Lorraine shopped. I still could barely get up when she came out. But while I sat I watched. Today this is a busy town, it is market day. People walk by, women with baskets, children dressed up. People greet each other with a double kiss. We went to a cafe and sat at a table outside with cafe au lait to revive us (me). The park/square across the street is crowded with vendors and shoppers. It's very clear on market day that people like new things - the same old shops inside the buildings that are here every day generate no interest. People love to come to the market! The couple sitting at the table next to us are British. They moved to a small town near here 1 1/2 years ago, into an old farmhouse. They come to Aigurande on market day. They have other British friends. The British man said we would have a good 10k downhill run out of town.

We (I) finally recovered enough to get up and go through the market; we got salami, cheese, bananas. The market shops: a section of clothes - women’s, children’s, hats, shoes. Some imports, India. Mattresses. Cheese, fresh meat, seafood, nuts, honey, poultry. One stand had one goose left, the woman was waiting for one more customer. Fresh vegetables, fruit, jams, dried fruits.

The British man was right, it was a lovely downhill run for a good half hour, and it plus our rest restored me quite a bit. By the time we got into Dun-le-Palestel, Lorraine had to go to the bathroom badly. She was just about in tears. We still didn't find a bathroom by the time we were nearly through town so we stopped; she decided to go on a search and I would wait. As she pedaled off, a tiny old woman appeared before me and asked if we were looking for something. I said yes, my daughter needs a bathroom! She had kind eyes, she said she had a bathroom we could use. I turned to call to Lorraine - had about one second before she went beyond the range of my voice - she heard me, and as she was coming back I looked at the lady and told her she was an angel. She laughed and said her name was Gabriel! I said yes, the angel Gabriel. She walked Lorraine into her house and when they came back Lorraine was feeling much, much better. Gabriel's house was large and high on a bank off the street. It had a thatched roof and little windows peeking out from under the thatch, and all across the front a garden of flowers blooming. She told us her daughter was married to an

Starting on the left, there are some coolers, a sack of something, a blue canvas type chair, a grown-up sized bicycle, a white plastic table and a couple of white chairs, some sort of inflatable toy or beachball type thing, a purple and pink "sit 'n spin" type toy, the green bottom of a Little Tikes Turtle Sandbox, a red upside down grown-up red bicycle, a blue basket, a red children's ride-in Jeep, a large blue inflatable wading/swimming pool, a red and yellow and blue type of toy box, a handle of some kind of toy, a wooden picnic table with umbrella, toy kitchen, another handle of an unidentified toy, a pinkish toy that might be an easel or beauty salon type thing, a children's slide, the green lid for the Little Tike's sand box, a Wonder Horse, and a red Radio Flyer children's wagon. The banner by upstairs window says, "It's a Boy" twice.
Also, on the left of this picture, that didn't fit in the picture, was a real vehicle, a real dog, another bicycle, and a real boat.
On 091808 I replaced this picture with the same thing, but brighter and cheerier. (C:\Documents and Settings\Compaq_Owner\My Documents\My Pictures\2008_09_17\2013theydontlackfortoys&playthingshere2.jpg)

InterBike Dirt Demo

InterBike Dirt Demo

His business card refers to him only as the 'Captain', and after witnessing his intense eyecontact and crooked smile while listening to him describe the new Corsair DH/Freeride frame I can understand why.

"I'm not selling them three knives. I'm selling them a Swiss army knife," Captain Pablo Tafoya of Corsair says as he explains why the frame is not sold with a shock. It's designed to fit four different shock lengths to leave the door open to be set up in whichever way the rider sees fit. If they want to set it up as a DH bike, it's designed for that. Freeriding? Done? Cafe cruiser? Sure, just don't tell the Captain or he'll probably punch you in the mommy/daddy button.

All of this is possible due to a redesigned linkage system, and pivot location, Tafoya says. I've already explained my technical proficiency and therefore am not even going to consider going into the specs on how he makes that happen. The thought of asking for details crossed my mind while listening to him, but then I realized that he was explaining just that and I was too intimidated to ask him to start over.
